Things that go bump in life (Sydney Morning Herald, January)

In Sarah Hall’s ‘She Murdered Mortal He’ – one of a number of absorbing stories in Granta 117: Horror – two lovers pay a visit to Mozambique. Travelling up from the South African border, their driver asks them what they do for a living. ‘I’m a lawyer’ replies the male half of the twosome, while his partner replies that she arranges ghost tours. The conversation continues:

- Oh, what, to see ghosts?
- Places where people have seen ghosts, in London. There are lots of places.
- But not the ghosts? No. That’s good. Then they can’t ask for their money back.
- Not really, no.
